BIBLE NT 104 THE BOOK OF COLOSSIANS
COURSE DESCRIPTION 4 Week Course The church at Colossae apparently got its start during Paul’s three-year ministry in Ephesus (A.D. 52–55). During this time, a Colossian named Epaphras probably traveled to Ephesus and responded to Paul’s proclamation of the gospel. This new believer returned to his hometown and began sharing the good news of Christ, which resulted in the birth of the Colossian church. At the time of this writing, Epaphras is with Paul in Rome and has likely shared the bad news that there was a dangerous teaching threatening the church at Colossae. Paul writes this letter to respond to this situation and to encourage these believers in their growth toward Christian maturity.

BIBLE NT 201 THE BOOK OF 1st CORINTHIANS
COURSE DESCRIPTION 6 Week Course First Corinthians covers a number of topics (see Key Themes, below). One theme emerges from these discussions, however, as Paul’s dominant concern. Paul wants this church, divided because of the arrogance of its more powerful members, to work together for the advancement of the gospel. He wants them to drop their divisive one-upmanship, build up the faith of those who are weak, and witness effectively to unbelievers.

BIBLE NT 202 THE BOOK OF 2nd CORINTHIANS
COURSE DESCRIPTION 6 Week Course This Course is the study of 2 Corinthians. The central theme of 2 Corinthians is the relationship between suffering and the power of the Spirit in Paul’s apostolic life, ministry, and message. In addition to calling into question Paul’s motives in organizing a collection for believers in Judea and questioning his personal courage, Paul’s opponents had argued that Paul suffered too much to be a Spirit-filled apostle of the risen Christ. Paul argues that his weakness as an apostle is the very means by which believers are comforted and God in Christ is made known in the world. Paul’s sufferings embody the cross of Christ, while his endurance amid adversity, with thanksgiving and contentment, manifests the resurrection power of the Spirit. Paul’s suffering as an apostle is thus the very means God uses to reveal his glory. Paul therefore sees a close tie between the Corinthians’ acceptance of his apostleship and the genuineness of their faith. To reject Paul and his proclamation is to reject Christ himself, since Paul’s message, ministry, and manner of life are one.

BIBLE NT 101 THE BOOK OF JUDE
COURSE DESCRIPTION 2 Week Course This Course is the study of the book of Jude. Jude warns against following those who have surreptitiously gained entry to the church and are perverting the one true faith with false teaching. Indeed, the letter warns against allowing the false teachers to continue to have influence. Jude calls the church to defend the truth aggressively against this infiltration. While the false teachers of Jude were profoundly libertine (morally unrestrained), it would be anachronistic to argue that they were Gnostic (an early heretical sect, or group of sects, influential from the 2nd century A.D. onward).

BIBLE NT 101 THE BOOK OF ISAIAH
COURSE DESCRIPTION 12 Week Course The overall genre of the book is prophecy. Although biblical prophets primarily tell forth God’s message in their contemporary situation, and less frequently foretell the future, the last third of Isaiah is an exception in being mainly predictive of the future. It is important to clarify two literary features of the foretelling: first, having been received in visions, it has many figurative elements; and second, its purpose is not simply to tell the future but to express the author’s sense of Israel’s place in God’s overarching redemptive plan for the world. $200
